Iām just going to get right into it⦠hereās the marketing mistake I see all the time:
Treating social media and email marketing like theyāre competing with each other.Ā
Theyāre not.
In fact, social media marketing and email marketing work best when they work together.š¤
Think of social media as the place where people discover you, get to know your brand, and decide they like what you have to say. Email marketing is where you continue that relationship, stay connected, and give people a reason to eventually become customers.
If youāre only using one of them, you may be leaving a lot of opportunities on the table.
Social Media Gets You Discovered
Social media is one of the best tools businesses have for getting in front of new people.
Someone might discover your business through an Instagram Reel, see a post a friend shared, find you through a hashtag, or come across your content on Facebook or TikTok.
They may not be ready to buy from you the first time they see you.
And thatās okay.
Social media gives you the opportunity to show people who you are, what you do, what you know, and why they should care.
It helps you:
- Build brand awareness
- Reach new audiences
- Showcase your expertise
- Build trust and credibility
- Let people see the personality behind your business
- Start conversations
- Drive people to your website, offers, and email list
But thereās one big problem with relying on social media alone.
You don’t own the platform.
Youāre building an audience on someone elseās platform, and the algorithm decides how many of those people actually see your content.
Thatās where email marketing comes in.
Email Marketing Helps You Build the Relationship
Once someone joins your email list, you have a more direct way to communicate with them.
You don’t have to hope Instagram decides to show them your latest post.
You don’t have to compete with every other account they follow.
You can show up directly in their inbox.
And that matters.
Email gives you the opportunity to go deeper than you typically can on social media. You can educate, tell stories, share behind-the-scenes content, promote an offer, announce something new, or simply stay top of mind.
Most importantly, you can continue building a relationship with someone after they discover you on social media.
Your Followers Are Not the Goal
This is something I wish more business owners understood.
Followers are great. Customers are better.
Growing your social media following can absolutely be valuable, but a large follower count doesn’t automatically mean you have a successful marketing strategy.
What happens after someone follows you?
Do they visit your website?
Join your email list?
Inquire about your services?
Purchase something?
Book a consultation?
Come back later when they’re ready to buy?
That’s where your marketing strategy really starts to matter.
Your goal isn’t simply to collect followers.
Your goal is to build relationships with people who could eventually become customers.
So How Should Social Media and Email Work Together?
Think of your marketing like a journey.
Step 1: Social media attracts them.
Someone discovers your business through your content.
Maybe they see a Reel that makes them laugh, perhaps you teach them something, or maybe they simply love your work.Ā
Whatever the reason, they found you and thatās all that matters.
Step 2: You give them a reason to stick around.
They follow you because your bio is clear and tells them exactly what youāre posting about, and they want more of what you’re sharing.
Now you’re building familiarity and trust.
Step 3: You invite them onto your email list.
This is the step a lot of businesses skip.
Give people a reason to join.
That could be a lead magnet such as a guide, checklist, discount, free resource, exclusive information, early access, or simply the promise of useful content delivered directly to their inbox.
Step 4: Email keeps the relationship going.
Now you have another way to communicate with that person.
You can provide more value, tell them about your business, answer questions, share your expertise, and introduce them to your offers.
Step 5: Your marketing makes it easy to buy.
When the person is ready, they already know who you are.
They’ve seen your content.
They’ve received your emails.
They’ve learned from you.
They’ve built trust in your brand.
So when they need what you offer, you’re not a stranger anymore.
You Don’t Need to Choose Between Social Media and Email Marketing
I hear business owners ask whether they should focus on social media or email marketing.
My answer?
You shouldn’t have to choose.
They serve different purposes.
Social media is fantastic for visibility and discovery.
Email marketing is fantastic for relationship building and conversion.
Social media helps you get people into your world.
Email gives you a way to keep talking to them once they’re there.
The Bottom Line
Your marketing shouldn’t be a collection of random posts and emails that you’re creating whenever you remember you need to ādo marketing.ā
Your channels should work together.
Social media gets you discovered.
Email marketing keeps you connected.
Your website and offers give people a place to take action.
And your strategy ties it all together.
And if you need help figuring out your social media strategy, building your email marketing, or making the two actually work together, I’ve got you.
