Here’s the truth- you don’t need a professional camera to create beautiful, engaging content. Fun fact, I bought a fancy shmancy camera last year, and I ended up returning it because I felt like it produced similar quality photos and videos as my iPhone did.
The iPhone in your hand is already capable of capturing high-quality photos and videos… it’s all about how you use it.
Whether you’re filming for your brand, capturing behind-the-scenes moments, or simply documenting your day-to-day, these simple tweaks can take your visuals from “meh” to “scroll-stopping-worthy.”
1. Lighting is everything.
Lighting can make or break your content.
- When shooting outdoors, use natural light to your advantage- morning and golden hour (right before sunset) are your best friends. You can also position the light behind your subject to create a beautiful rim light or to the side for more depth and dimension. Just make sure your subject isn’t looking directly into the light.
- If you’re filming indoors, make sure the light source is behind the camera.
- Avoid harsh overhead light; step into open shade for a softer, more flattering glow.
Pro tip: Tap on your subject on the screen before taking the photo so the camera adjusts the exposure. You can even press down and slide your finger up to make the shot brighter or down to darken it. Start at around +0.3 exposure for a natural, bright look.
2. Clean your lens.
It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how much clearer your photos look after a quick wipe with your shirt or lens cloth. Goodbye cloudy selfies, hello crisp content.
3. Turn on your gridlines.
Head to Settings → Camera → Grid → ON.
This helps you keep your horizon straight and use the rule of thirds for more balanced, professional-looking compositions.
4. Capture movement.
Content with movement feels real and relatable.
Film a short clip of you walking, flipping your hair, reaching for your coffee, or cheersing a drink. It’s small, but it creates energy and connection that is great for b-roll content.
Hold your phone steady and count to 3 before and after your movement- this makes editing later so much easier.
5. Use 0.5x (wide angle) for landscapes or group shots.
That little 0.5x icon? It’s your secret weapon for giving your content a cinematic feel. Perfect for capturing spaces, city streets, or your full outfit in one frame.
6. Shoot vertical for social media.
Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook Reels all love vertical (portrait mode) video. Horizontal still has its place- think YouTube or website banners, but vertical helps your content fit the frame (and the algorithm).
7. Tap + Hold for focus and exposure.
Tap your subject to focus, then press and hold to lock it. Next, slide the little sun icon up or down to fine-tune the brightness until it looks just right.
This tiny trick instantly levels up your image quality- no filters required.
8. Get a mix of shots.
Variety keeps your visuals interesting! At each location or setup, aim for:
- A wide shot (the full scene)
- A medium shot (waist-up or group)
- A detail shot (coffee cup, laptop, jewelry, hands, etc.)
That mix of context, personality, and detail helps tell a story- which is exactly what your audience wants to see.
TL;DR
You don’t need to be a professional photographer to create content that connects. You just need to be intentional- with your lighting, angles, and storytelling.
Because at the end of the day, your content doesn’t need to be perfect– it just needs to feel real.
